In both grades 7 and 8, the goal is to develop fluency in French, giving students as many opportunities as possible to hear, speak and write the language. Most classes are discussion-based, and the students are encouraged to speak, no matter the topic at hand. To do so, we watch documentaries, listen to newscasts, discuss and debate many subjects, from the history of France in the. 17th century to the challenges posed by the climate change. Students continue to learn fundamentals of the language by studying relevant grammar rules, expanding vocabulary and using writing frameworks and guidelines. They also learn about efficient public speaking and are given many opportunities to do presentations on topics of their choice.
Grade 7 French: We study different novels in class such as Les trois mousquetaires and contemporary Canadian science-fiction novels. We learn about the different forms of speech (narrative, descriptive and argumentative) by studying texts and writing fiction stories, descriptive texts, argumentative speeches etc. Students write book reports on self-read French books. They learn to listen actively to French programs, take notes on the fly, and debate the topic at hand.
Grade 8 French: We study different novels in class such as Le compte de Monte Cristo and contemporary novels and texts from various francophone countries.
