Programming Lego League

The First Lego League (FLL) is an international competition of the FIRST organization. The FLL is designed for children aged nine to fourteen. FIRST stands for “Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”. The FLL program introduces younger students to real-world engineering challenges. Participants build a LEGO-based robot to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface.

In September each year the FLL releases a new challenge, based on a real-world scientific topic. The challenge consists of three parts: a Robot Game, a Project, and the FLL Core Values.

Teams have two months to design, build, test and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology. The robot will need to complete the missions and score points in the Robot Game.

For the Project, team members must identify a problem, related to a specific team set by FLL, and come up with an innovative solution. They need to present that solution to judges.

As for the team work, observation judges watch each team in action and also interview the team to discuss how the team functioned. Judges identify teams that best demonstrate enthusiasm, spirit, partnership, respect to their own teammates and others, and show gracious professionalism.

Our school started this program in the academic year of 2008-2009. Each year students who are interested in the program start working hard after school to accomplish the missions and work on the project.

Our teams have done very well. In 2009-2010, the team won the most Innovative Design Award for the robot during the regional competition. In 2010-2011 our team won the Project Award during the regional, and proudly made it to the provincials where it won the Robot Design Award. In the year 2011-2012 the team made it again to the provincials by winning the Champion’s Award, which is the most prestigious award in the qualifier tournament. In the provincials, our team won the Most Innovative Solution Award.

The children truly enjoy it! They have fun, find it exciting, and they are all proud of gaining skills that will last a lifetime.
